Join us in November for our up coming exhibit titled “Between Night and Day”.
This month we are focusing on a one-person show that features the work of Chicago based artist Lou Shields.
Shields, the owner of EXPgallery will exhibit his most recent series of works. Shields has created tormented figures with distorted and exaggerated proportions. The mysterious characters in each monochromatic panel evoke many emotions in the viewer. Are the characters people the artist knows? Could they be lost souls or broken beings? Or are they fragments of memory in a world filled with good people and bad?
The series begins with these figures finding safety within strong Roman and Gothic arches and ancient Wat structures. The artist deconstructs these firm, load bearing architectural supports as the work evolves. The series continues with chaotic surroundings. Images of deconstruction, collapse and even destitute landscape fill the immediate surroundings of the broken beings. This evolution could mirror the rise and fall of so many civilizations, religions and cultures. Like countless periods of human history, great waves rise and rapidly crash down, only to have another wave come and obliterate the next. It is in this intermediate moment of calm, between strikes where the artist has captured these images.
Also on display will be the art of “Wired” - jewelry made from recycled materials. www.wiredresistance.com
